Quick Answer
From the Niedzica area on the Czorsztyn Lake, you can cycle to Szczawnica via a comfortable, largely car-free route along the Dunajec. One way, it's about 25 km, so the full round trip is roughly 45-55 km, depending on which shore you choose and which crossings you take. The route is almost entirely flat, runs along the edge of the Pienińskiego Parku Narodowego, and is suitable for families and e-bikes. The most convenient return is the same river valley route.
Velo Dunajec and Velo Czorsztyn - What Are These Routes?
Velo Dunajec is a marked cycling route that runs through the Dunajec valley, from the river's sources in the Tatras towards the Beskidu Sądeckiego and beyond. Its Pieniny section connects with the Velo Czorsztyn loop, which circles the Czorsztyn Lake. From the resort on Czorsztyn Lake near Niedzica, you can hop onto the Velo Czorsztyn route practically from your doorstep - the start is about 300 m from the shore.
For a trip to Szczawnica, we're interested in the section that runs from the lake area downstream along the river, through Krościenko nad Dunajcem, to Szczawnica at the entrance to the famous Przełom Dunajca.
How Velo Czorsztyn Differs from the Route to Szczawnica
Velo Czorsztyn is a closed loop around the reservoir - great for calm, shorter rides with children. The route to Szczawnica is a linear journey: you leave the lake area and cycle with the flow of the Dunajec. Both routes share some sections, so you can easily combine them into one day.
Surface and Character of the Route
Most of the way is asphalt and hardened cycling paths, in places separated from car traffic. There are short stretches on local roads and passages through villages. The route runs low, close to the water, so the elevation gains are minimal - it's a classic valley ride, not a mountain climb.
Route Step by Step: From Niedzica to Szczawnica
It's easiest to think of the journey as three stages: getting to the lake shore and circling the reservoir, descending the Dunajec valley to Krościenko, and from there a short section to Szczawnica.
Stage 1: From the Czorsztyn Lake Area Towards the Dam and Czorsztyn
You head to the shore area (Velo Czorsztyn start approx. 300 m from the resort) and head towards the western end of the reservoir. Along the way you pass the Zapory Niedzica area (about 1 km from the resort), you have a view of Zamek Dunajec on one side and the ruins of the castle in Czorsztyn on the other. This is the most scenic start of the entire journey.
Stage 2: Crossing the Dunajec and Descending the Valley
To move from the lake area to the proper shore that leads downriver, some route variants use a crossing. Below the dam, the valley narrows, and the route follows the course of the Dunajec, passing meadows, wooded areas, and the foothills of the Pieniny ridges.
Ferry Crossing - What's Involved
Around the Pieniny Mountains there are seasonal ferry crossings and cycling footbridges that allow you to cross from one shore to the other without adding extra kilometres. Ferries usually operate in summer and when water levels are suitable, but outside season or when the river level is high, they may be closed.
Before You Plan a Crossing
- Check the current status of the ferry or footbridge directly with the ferry operator or at the tourist information point - hours and service schedules change seasonally.
- When water levels on the Dunajec are high, crossings may be suspended; have an alternative route via a bridge in mind.
- Small fees for transporting a bike are approximate - confirm the rates on site.
Stage 3: Krościenko nad Dunajcem and Finish in Szczawnica
Krościenko nad Dunajcem is a natural stopping point - a village at the foot of the Pieniny with a market square, shops and restaurants, good for a longer break. From Krościenko to Szczawnica it's just a short, comfortable section along the river. Szczawnica welcomes you with a promenade, Plac Dietla and the entrance to the Przełom Dunajca, where rafters end their descents.
Distance, Time and Route Profile
The values below are approximate and depend on which variant you choose, which crossings you take, and your pace. The distance from the resort to the start of Velo Czorsztyn is minimal (about 300 m), so we'll start counting practically from the lake.
| Section | Distance (approximate) | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Resort - shore / Velo Czorsztyn start | approx. 0.3 km | approach |
| Lake area - Krościenko nad Dunajcem | approx. 18-20 km | valley, easy |
| Krościenko nad Dunajcem - Szczawnica | approx. 5-7 km | short, comfortable |
| Total one way | approx. 25 km | mostly flat |
| Full round trip | approx. 45-55 km | for determined families and e-bikes |
How Much Time to Allow
For the actual ride one way, an average cyclist needs about 1.5-2 hours, plus stops. With breaks for photos, coffee and lunch in Szczawnica, realistically plan the whole day - from a morning departure to an afternoon return.
Shortened Variant
If the full loop is too much, just cycle to Krościenko and have a longer break there, saving Szczawnica for another time. You can also do one section one way and return using local transport or a shuttle bus, if one happens to be running.
Return: The Same Distance, Different Direction
The most reliable and prettiest return is the same river valley route, just with a slightly stronger, gentle headwind - you're cycling upstream on the Dunajec, so the last few kilometres back to the lake can be minimally more demanding. For families and people on regular bikes, that's good news: there are no steep climbs, only gentle, long gradients.
Can You Return by Something Other Than Bike?
In season, some sections are served by local buses and transport companies that may be able to take your bike - this is a backup option if you're tired or the weather turns. However, availability and bike space are limited and seasonal, so don't plan your entire logistics around it. It's safest to assume a return by bike and treat transport as Plan B.
