Szczawnica (Palenica, Velo Dunajec)

Szczawnica, about 25 km from the resort, is worth setting aside a full day for: it is one of Poland's best-known mountain spa towns, picturesquely tucked between the Pieniny and the Beskid Sądecki range above the Dunajec. From the promenade and Plac Dietla you can ride a chairlift to the top of Palenica (722 m above sea level), which offers a panorama of the Pieniny and, in good weather, the Tatras too. The Velo Dunajec cycling route also runs through the town, and the famous raft trip through the Dunajec gorge ends by the river here, so Szczawnica combines a stroll through the historic spa quarter with active time outdoors.

History

Where it comes from

The name Szczawnica comes from the acidic mineral waters, called "szczawy" by the highlanders. The spa town's development is tied to the Szalay family: the Szczawnica estate was bought in 1828 by Stefan Szalay, and from 1839 it was managed and systematically expanded by his son, Józef Szalay. It was thanks to him - and to a visit and guidelines from the physician Józef Dietl in 1857 - that by the mid-19th century Szczawnica had achieved the rank of a European-level spa town, with its characteristic wooden spa architecture and mineral-water intakes. The tradition of the raft trip through the Dunajec gorge, today one of the region's trademarks, dates back to the mid-19th century, and the Polish Association of Pieniny Raftsmen on the Dunajec, which organises the raftsmen, was founded in 1934.
