Where it comes from
Lake Czorsztyn, around which Velo Czorsztyn runs, is an artificial reservoir created after a dam was built on the Dunajec at Niedzica; filling of the reservoir basin began in 1997. The old village of Maniowy was submerged beneath it, its residents resettled and most of the buildings demolished. The reservoir powers the Niedzica Hydroelectric Power Plant Complex with a pumped-storage plant (two turbines of 2 × 46 MW) hidden inside the rock massif. The lake's landscape is framed by two medieval border castles: the ruins of Czorsztyn Castle on the Polish shore (first mentioned around 1320, a former royal stronghold guarding the border with Hungary) and the preserved Dunajec Castle in Niedzica on the other shore, built by the Hungarians in the first half of the 14th century. The cycling route itself is a modern investment, completed at the turn of 2019 and 2020 as part of the expansion of the Velo Dunajec network.
