Where it comes from
Mount Wdżar is built of volcanic rock rare in Poland - Pieniny andesite, whose deposits were quarried locally from the 19th century until the 1980s; the stone extracted was used, among other things, to surface the road over the Snozka pass. A special spot on the slope is the Papal Gorge (Wąwóz Papieski): on 9 July 1978 the then-Cardinal Karol Wojtyła celebrated Mass there during a gathering of Light-Life Movement retreat groups, and today a stone altar and a cross made from a quarry boulder stand at the site. An educational trail through the gorge was opened to visitors in 2011. The ski station with its chairlift on Wdżar was expanded at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries.
