Where it comes from
The monastery was founded in 1319 for the Carthusian order; the foundation is tied to the Berzeviczy (Kokosz/Kokos) family, established in circumstances of atonement and the granting of the village of Lechnica. Over time the wooden buildings were replaced with masonry ones, and the name "Red" comes from the red elements of the building (bricks, details). The Carthusians managed the site until roughly the mid-16th century - the community was dissolved in 1563. At the start of the 18th century (monks settled there in 1711) the property was taken over by the Camaldolese, who rebuilt the complex in baroque style and led a strict, hermit-like life combined with herb growing, farming and beekeeping. The monastery was dissolved in 1782 under Emperor Joseph II. After post-war restoration work, the building was opened as a museum, with an expanded exhibition unveiled in 1993.
